I arranged to have dinner with a friend the other day, at the Savoy. Well, I thought I had, but he wasn’t actually available, as I supposed he would be. Anyway, I had booked a nanny, and I thought why not just go anyway. Jenn was away and I was pretty set on the beef wellington — that’s what triggered the whole affair. I quite enjoyed my dinner alone, except for the sympathetic looks from the Saudi Arabian family on the table next to me. Also, the arrival of the ‘Happy Birthday’ chocolate truffle plate I had instinctively asked for over the phone, when asked whether or not it was a special occasion, was a bit embarrassing. Overall a 7/10.
